Grandmaster Cheng Wan (glasses) is one of kind. He is old fashioned and yet high tech. He is Hakka with International friends. He is aged but remains young at heart.
I sought him out unsuccesfully some seventeen years ago. He was on a list of Hong Kong Chu Gar masters that Sifu Gene Chen gave me and suggested I visit. Like most on the list, at that time it was nearly impossible to see them.
Very few remain alive today that were on that list, but, I finally caught up with Cheng Wan at his home, in Hong Kong, in 2002. He was well acquainted with my Chu Gar teacher, Gene Chen and my Grand Teachers, and so welcomed me.
Over the last six years, I have visited him often and accepted the invitation to his annual Celebration which always includes dozens of demonstrations and awards from various styles including Chu Gar, Bok Mei White Eyebrow, Dragon Shadow, Choy Li Fut, Hung Gar, Wing Chun, North Shaolin, Qigong and many more. Hundreds of folks, from the world over, gather on or near his birthday
every year.
Unicorns and Lions dance and dazzle the crowd before the swearing in of new students and the kungfu demonstrations. And then he treats everyone to fantastic meals, great wine and Karaoke! Its a kungfu celebration of the first order!
